In this lesson you will be reading whole notes, half notes and rests. This lesson also introduces bar line counting, where the first beat in each measure represents the number of that measure. If bar line counting seems a little difficult, then continue to count as we did in the previous lessons where the first beat in every measure is one. Barline counting is important as it will help you keep your place especially if you are playing the same thing over a long period of time.

This lesson introduces new time signatures in 2/4, 3/4, and 5/4. The top numbers tell you how many beats or pulses in a measure. Review lesson three if you have any questions or make any mistakes in filling out the bar line placement on page one. Be sure to tap your foot and count out loud when playing page two.

This is a review lesson of everything you have learned so far. Put in the bar lines on page 1 and play the exercises on page 2, 3 and 4 starting slowly and eventually playing them at the suggested metronome marking of 82-100 or faster if you can. After you play each exercise twice, you should go down the entire page as if there were no repeat signs and you were playing one long piece of music. Another good exercise is to write your own exercises to play.
